EUROPEAN POLICE GET MEDIA RELATIONS TRAINING
|
State Dept. Sends Top Police Media Expert |
ZAGREB, Croatia -- Police chiefs, commanders,
prosecutors and spokespersons in the Republic of Croatia (former Yugoslavia) had a unique
opportunity to be trained by
Chris Ryan, a
top international police media relations expert.
U.S. State Department officials sent Mr. Ryan to work with police
executives for 7-weeks at the request of
the Republic of Croatia Government.
Law enforcement officials in this burgeoning democracy face
an ever-changing news media. Croatian journalists often take cues
from their American and European
counterparts in how to deal with law enforcement and court officers.
Croatian law enforcement executives listened attentively and took
copious notes during their 1-week training sessions with Mr. Ryan.
Attendees were hungry for any information that will assist and
prepare them for challenges they are facing.
The East European nation is
making a slow but steady transition from communism to a modern
democracy. Many of those in attendance were former communists
looking at a democratic society for the first time. Issues that are
common place for American law enforcement executives were new and often difficult
to grasp. Training for Croatian police executives included; Police media relations in a
free society, crisis and crime scene communications, verbal and non-verbal message development,
tactical media relations, interview and news conference preparation, etc.
